Kilograms and pounds

The international pound is defined as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms. That means one kilogram is about 2.20462 pounds.

lb = kg × 2.20462 kg = lb × 0.453592

70 kg × 2.20462 = 154.3 lb. Going the other way, 150 lb × 0.453592 = 68.0 kg.

Ounces, stone and tons

  • Ounce: 1/16 of a pound, about 28.35 grams. Used for food portions and postage in the US.
  • Stone: 14 pounds (6.35 kg). Still common for body weight in the UK and Ireland, written like "11 st 2 lb".
  • US short ton: 2,000 lb (907 kg). UK long ton: 2,240 lb (1,016 kg). Metric tonne: 1,000 kg.

Mass vs weight

Strictly speaking, kilograms and pounds measure mass, the amount of matter in an object. Weight is the force of gravity on that mass. On the Moon your mass stays the same but your weight is about one-sixth. In everyday use the two words mean the same thing.

Kitchen tip

Dry ingredients are more accurate by weight than by volume. A US cup of flour weighs about 120–125 g, but a cup of sugar is about 200 g. For volume conversions, use the volume converter.
