| 1 | 5 | 10 | 50 | 100 | 500 | 1,000 |
The rules
- Symbols are written from largest to smallest and added: VIII = 5 + 3 = 8.
- A smaller symbol before a larger one is subtracted, but only in six pairs: IV (4), IX (9), XL (40), XC (90), CD (400) and CM (900).
- No symbol repeats more than three times in a row, so 4 is IV, not IIII (except on some clock faces).
2026 = 2000 + 20 + 6 = MM + XX + VI = MMXXVI. And 1999 = M + CM + XC + IX = MCMXCIX.
Where you still see them
Super Bowl numbers, movie copyright dates, clock faces, book chapters, monarchs' names (Charles III) and tattoos of important dates. The converter checks that a numeral is correctly formed, which helps before committing a date to ink.
