Cups to Grams Converter
Convert cups, tablespoons and teaspoons to grams and ounces for flour, sugar, butter and other baking ingredients, and back again.
Why cups to grams depends on the ingredient
A cup measures volume; a gram measures weight. A cup of flour weighs far less than a cup of sugar because flour is lighter and fluffier. That is why professional bakers and most recipes outside the US weigh ingredients: it is more accurate and repeatable.
| Ingredient | 1 US cup | 1 tablespoon |
|---|---|---|
| All-purpose flour | 120 g | 7.5 g |
| Granulated sugar | 200 g | 12.5 g |
| Brown sugar, packed | 220 g | 13.8 g |
| Powdered sugar | 120 g | 7.5 g |
| Butter | 227 g | 14.2 g |
| Water | 237 g | 14.8 g |
| Rolled oats | 90 g | 5.6 g |
| Cocoa powder | 85 g | 5.3 g |
A recipe calls for 2½ cups of all-purpose flour: 2.5 × 120 = 300 g. One stick of butter is ½ cup, or 113 g.
How you fill the cup matters
Scooping flour straight from the bag packs it down and can add 20% or more. For the weights above, spoon flour into the cup and level it with a knife. Brown sugar is the exception: recipes expect it packed firmly.
US, metric and UK cups
This converter uses the US cup of about 236.6 ml. Australia, Canada and the UK often use a 250 ml metric cup, about 6% larger. Tablespoons also differ: 15 ml in most countries but 20 ml in Australia.
