Common pressure conversions
| Unit | Equals |
|---|---|
| 1 bar | 14.504 psi · 100 kPa |
| 1 psi | 0.0689 bar · 6.895 kPa |
| 1 atm | 101.325 kPa · 14.696 psi · 760 mmHg |
| 1 inHg | 3.386 kPa · 33.86 mbar |
Car tires are often set to 32 psi, which is 2.21 bar or 221 kPa.
Where each unit is used
- PSI: tire pressure, air compressors and plumbing in the US.
- Bar and kPa: tire pressure and engineering in most other countries; weather maps use millibars (hectopascals).
- mmHg: blood pressure. A reading of 120/80 means 120 mmHg and 80 mmHg.
- inHg: barometric pressure in US weather reports and aviation altimeter settings (29.92 inHg is standard).
Gauge vs absolute pressure
Tire gauges read gauge pressure, the amount above the surrounding air. Absolute pressure adds atmospheric pressure, about 14.7 psi at sea level. The conversion factors are the same for both.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert psi to bar?
Divide psi by 14.504. For example, 35 psi is about 2.41 bar.
What is standard atmospheric pressure?
101,325 pascals, which is 1 atm, 1.01325 bar, 14.696 psi, 760 mmHg or 29.92 inHg.
Is kPa the same as hPa?
No. 1 kPa equals 10 hPa (hectopascals). One hectopascal equals one millibar.
