The markup formula

Selling price = Cost × (1 + Markup% ÷ 100)

An item that costs $40 with a 50% markup sells for $60. Profit is $20, which is a 33.3% gross margin.

Markup is not margin

Markup is profit as a percentage of cost; margin is profit as a percentage of price. A 100% markup is only a 50% margin. Mixing them up is a common pricing mistake that quietly erodes profit. Use the profit margin calculator when you know the price.

Typical markups

Markups vary widely by industry. Grocery items often carry small markups and rely on volume, while clothing, jewelry and restaurant drinks commonly carry 100% or more to cover rent, staff and unsold stock. Your markup must cover all overhead, not only the cost of the item.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a 30% markup?

What markup gives a 50% margin?

A 100% markup: price is double the cost.

How do I find markup from price and cost?

Markup % = (Price − Cost) ÷ Cost × 100.
