GPA Calculator
Calculate your grade point average on the 4.0 scale from letter grades and credit hours.
How GPA is calculated
Each letter grade is worth a number of grade points. Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours, add them up, and divide by the total credits.
GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ credits
| Grade | Points | Grade | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| A / A+ | 4.0 | C+ | 2.3 |
| A− | 3.7 | C | 2.0 |
| B+ | 3.3 | C− | 1.7 |
| B | 3.0 | D+ / D / D− | 1.3 / 1.0 / 0.7 |
| B− | 2.7 | F | 0.0 |
Calculus B+ (3.3 × 4 = 13.2), English A (4.0 × 3 = 12), Biology A− (3.7 × 4 = 14.8) and History B (3.0 × 3 = 9) total 49 points over 14 credits, a GPA of 3.50.
Entering your courses
Type one course per line with a letter grade and the number of credits, for example Chemistry A- 4. The course name is optional; the calculator reads the grade and uses the last number on the line as credits.
Weighted vs unweighted GPA
This calculator gives an unweighted GPA on the standard 4.0 scale. Many high schools also report a weighted GPA that adds 0.5 or 1.0 point for honors, AP or IB classes. Colleges often recalculate GPA using their own method, so check with the schools you are applying to.
Raising your GPA
Courses with more credits move your GPA the most. Early in your studies each grade has a big effect; after many semesters, the average becomes harder to shift, so steady effort from the start pays off.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good GPA?
A 3.0 (B average) is generally considered good, and 3.5 or higher is strong. Competitive programs often expect 3.7 or above.
How do I calculate cumulative GPA?
List all courses from every semester and calculate as one group, or combine semester GPAs weighted by the credits in each semester.
Do pass/fail classes affect GPA?
Usually not. Pass/fail courses earn credit but are normally left out of the GPA calculation. Leave them out of the list.
