How to convert a decimal to a fraction

  1. Write the decimal over 1 and multiply top and bottom by 10 for each digit after the decimal point: 0.375 = 375/1000.
  2. Simplify by dividing both by their greatest common factor (125): 375/1000 = 3/8.

2.6 = 26/10 = 13/5 = 2 3/5 as a mixed number. On a tape measure the nearest sixteenth is 2 5/8 inches.
