Final Grade Calculator
Find the score you need on your final exam to reach a target grade in the course.
The formula
Your course grade is a weighted average of your current grade and your final exam. Rearranging that average gives the score you need:
Required = (Target − Current × (1 − w)) ÷ w
where w is the final's weight as a decimal.
You have 82% and the final is worth 30%. To finish with 85%: (85 − 82 × 0.7) ÷ 0.3 = (85 − 57.4) ÷ 0.3 = 92%.
Reading the result
- A result over 100% means the target is out of reach unless there is extra credit.
- A result of zero or below means you have already secured the target grade.
- The table under the calculator shows the course grade you would end with for a range of exam scores.
Study planning tips
Check your syllabus for the exact weight of the final and whether it can replace a lower midterm score. If the required score is high, focus revision on topics that carried the most marks in past assignments, and ask your instructor about practice exams.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate what I need on my final?
Subtract your current grade times the non-final weight from your target, then divide by the final's weight. The calculator does this instantly.
What if my current grade is in points, not percent?
Divide your points earned by points possible so far and multiply by 100 to get a percentage first.
Can I still pass if I need over 100%?
Not on the exam alone. Ask your instructor about extra credit, dropped scores or other ways to raise your grade.
