President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of thanksgiving in 1863, set for the last Thursday of November. In 1939 President Franklin D. Roosevelt moved it a week earlier to lengthen the holiday shopping season, which proved controversial. In 1941 Congress fixed the date by law as the fourth Thursday of November, where it has stayed. Canada celebrates its Thanksgiving on the second Monday of October.
Planning ahead
- Travel: the Wednesday before and Sunday after Thanksgiving are among the busiest travel days of the year in the US. Book early.
- Turkey: a frozen turkey needs about one day in the fridge for every 4–5 pounds to thaw, so a 20 lb bird needs four to five days.
- Shopping: Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday the Monday after.
