How military time works

Military time counts the hours of the day from 00 to 23, so there is no AM or PM. It is written as four digits without a colon and often followed by "hours": 2:30 PM is 1430 hours.

  • For times from 1:00 PM to 11:59 PM, add 12 to the hour: 7:15 PM → 1915.
  • For morning times, keep the hour and add a leading zero: 6:30 AM → 0630.
  • Midnight is 0000; noon is 1200.

Who uses it

Besides the armed forces, the 24-hour clock is standard in hospitals, aviation, emergency services, public transport timetables and most countries outside the US, because it removes any AM/PM confusion.
